The Story of the Shabalala Clan
The history of the Shabalala clan reaches back through generations of kings, princes, families and communities whose journeys shaped the lineage that exists today.
According to the history preserved within the lineage, Ludonga I had a son named Mavuso, whose descendants became connected to the story of kingship, migration and the eventual establishment of the Mandlangampisi lineage.
The story follows the journey from Eswatini to the mountains of Simakade, the settlement within the caves, the generations that followed, and the rise of Mandlangampisi and Hlomendlini.
It is a story of movement, leadership, courage, conflict and survival.
The Birth of Hlomendlini
During an attack by Zulu warriors, the people of Mandlangampisi sought refuge inside a cave.
As the warriors entered, a young queen carrying a child stood at the corner of the cave and defended her people with a spear.
The warriors were defeated, and the story of her courage became part of the history of the royal lineage.
The son she later gave birth to was named Hlomendlini, in remembrance of the action that took place at the entrance of the cave.
Hlomendlini would grow to become an important figure in the continuation of the Mandlangampisi royal lineage.
